Before I started my soap making, I spent hours reading and researching into the benefits of making soap from scratch.
One of the main factors was the scary ingredients in shop soap. I couldn't pronounce half of them, and the couple that I did know of, I knew they were nasties for our skin.
As anything that is put on our skin, it gets absorbed into our bloodstream, so I knew if I could use something more natural it had to benefit our health.
Another thing that I discovered which bugged me, was most soap companies took naturally occuring glycerin from their soap product and sold it off to cosmetics companies. For those of you who don't know, Glycerin naturally occurs during the soap making process, and is essential for moisture in your skin. It actually draws in moisture from the air to your skin, so it makes sense to have this in soap!
My soaps are made the old fashioned way, using quality olive, coconut, palm, and castor oils, reacting them with sodium hydroxide (which without, it is IMPOSSIBLE to make soap) and adding only a small amount of frangrance and/or colour, and which I cure for around 6 weeks. By this stage you get a neutral PH soap which feels like nothing else on your skin.
By making soap almost like grandma used to make (minus the animal fats, lol), I know exactly what goes into my soap and I wouldn't have it any other way.
